Alex Kalienka is in an awful jam.

Literally, a traffic jam — but figuratively, his whole life is a mess. A dream job turned nightmare at the biggest animation studio in the world. A love affair that is not what he imagined. And possibly someone with a life-threatening grudge against him…

In his first new graphic novel since 2001′s acclaimed Mail Order Bride, Mark Kalesniko compresses an entire life into a single day as the frustrated animator, stewing on a pitiless California freeway, alternately rages, reminisces, fantasizes, and hallucinates — intercut with a series of imagined moments from two generations ago, the Golden Age of animation, when an earlier Alex made his entry into a much different professional world.

Loaded with fascinating insider gossip and historical details on two different eras of animators, skipping seamlessly among the present and several different pasts, reality and fantasy, Freeway is another step forward for a major cartooning talent.

“Kalesniko is an expert at sophisticated, visually efficient narrative renderings of complex emotions. His drawings are spare and cinematic, and each panel underscores the characters’ psychological isolation or another revealing detail.” — Publishers Weekly on Mail Order Bride

This is the VJ Movement

Posted by: | Comments (0)

2 This is the VJ MovementVJ Movement finds One11 a great initiative. It comes very close to the idea that forms the basis of VJ Movement. With over 200 professional video journalists and cartoonists from more than 100 countries, we try to give viewers more insight into the things that happen in the world.
Our motto is “There’s More Than One Truth” and that’s why we let journalists with very different backgrounds tell their stories. It gives us incredible inspiring stories with people we would otherwise never meet. That’s what One11 also wants to do: Stay away from the hard news and take the Dutch viewers into the particular lives lived around the world. How To Draw Lazy Storyboards

Posted by: | Comments (1)

2 How To Draw Lazy StoryboardsAn example of how one can do the bare minimum as far as consideration of posing and expression, and still produce a storyboard sequence considered “professional grade” for a modern animated kids show.

My full, highly snarky blog post on this topic is here: http://nakedfella.com/blog/?p=105

Please note that I’m not suggesting I’m such a fantastic board artist myself, only that my priority is good posing and expression, and many professional board artists think differently.

Oh, and excuse the bad audio. I did this quickly. I’ve got deadlines. icon smile How To Draw Lazy Storyboards

Posted by: | Comments (1)

I have a Career Exploration project and I need answers to some questions by someone in the field of Animation. Please copy and paste the questions and answer the questions and then post your name(first name only is ok). Thanks.

What are the entry-level jobs in this field/organization?

What career paths are generally available?

What are the major responsibilities of these positions?

What skills and education are needed to enter this field?

What kinds of entry-level jobs or internships do you think are good training ground?

What do you do as a animator/cartoonist?

How do you spend a typical day/week?

Do you spend most of your time at your desk? Moving around the company? Outside?

What kinds of problems do you deal with?

What kinds of decisions do you make?

What are your major responsibilities?

What hours do you normally work? Is there much travel involved?

What is the job title of the person you report to? The titles of people who report to you?

What do you find most/least satisfying about your job?

What are the positive/negative aspects of working in this field?

Would you trace your own career path? Is this typical, and if not, what might a beginner expect today?

What are the "hot issues" in this field?

What trends and developments do you see affecting career opportunities?

What is the corporate culture of your company? Is it informal or formal? Do people work autonomously or in teams?

Can you give me advice on how to break into this field?

Are you active in any professional organizations? Are students invited to attend? Are student memberships available?

What is your salary?

Do you find this childish people?

Posted by: | Comments (2)

I aspire to be a cartoonist A.K.A Comic Book Artist/Mangaka…………..I draw comics and do professional quality work and hope to get something published someday….I am 18 going 19….some people think its childish some dont….what do you think?

Whats so funny is that if I began to start making profit, money, and fame off my work and stories people are gonna be all over me when they hear about what I do……..yet it was childish before I started making money from it

A cartoonist is just a different kind of artist so I don’t think it’s childish

A cartoon in which two police officers shoot a chimp has the usual professional victims coming out from under their rocks.

One of the officers remarks about someone else having to be found to write a stimulus bill as they shoot the chimp.

Al Sharpton & a handful of other irrelevant characters are now protesting the cartoon claiming…but what else, RACISM.

The cartoon is clearly a parody of the recent chimp attack in Connecticut. It was a cartoonists commentary on what HE thought of the current stimulus bill.

Sharpton & company have once again managed to spotlight themselves using their usual race card – claiming the chimp is supposed to symbolize Obama.

The only ones relating Obama to the chimp are Shaptons camp.

Do you think they have a valid complaint or are they desperately reaching for one?

Do you understand the cartoon or do you somehow link the chimp to Obama?
That’s the thing thought – they DIDN"T compare the chimp to Obama.

It was making fun of what the cartoonist thought was a poorly drafted bill.

The only ones cannecting Obama to a chimp are the people b1tching about it.

Al Sharpton is an opportunist, he will take anything he can to cry foul. The Spending bill was not written by Obama it was written by Pelosi, and Sharpton and other liberal media people are going to take advantage of people’s ignorance of this fact. This is how the left works.

The chimp shot is use as a reference to the spending bill like the age old joke. 1000 monkeys at 1000 typewriters and you’ll have Shakespeare. But the Spending Bill is by far so bad it’s like a monkey did write it.
